Battleground States Show Sharp Decline For Obama. AS MITT ROMNEY MOPS UP IN FLORIDA TONIGHT, many of my fellow conservative commenters diss and whine about Romney's conservative qualifications, his …

The following data is from all of 2011, and 2012 is not looking any better.

The Good News For Obama

His political standing is in reasonable but not good shape in traditionally Democratic Midwestern battlegrounds such as Wisconsin and Michigan and the more Republican heartland state of Iowa where his rating is 46 approval/46 disapproval.

And his numbers in Virginia are better than those in other battleground states 45% approve, 49% disapprove.

His numbers in North Carolina 44/49 approve/disapprove and Florida 44/48 approve/disapprove and even in Georgia 45/48 approve/disapprove aren’t good, but given his overall numbers, they aren’t that bad either.

The Bad News For Obama

His job approval ratings in the other battleground states are solidly underwater however, and in many states, they are much worse than publicly perceived, mostly because of White House spin.

In Colorado, which is seen as a gateway to aggressively contesting the Southwest, Obama scored a net -12 job approval 40/52 throughout the year.

In Nevada, also seen as a major bellwether, Obama has a 41% approval rating, with 50% of respondents disapproving.

In the critical battleground state of Ohio, 50% of voters disapprove of his performance, with only 42% approving.

And in the must-win state of Pennsylvania, Obam’s job approval is underwater, with 45% approving and 48% disapproving.

More Bad News

New Mexico is seen as a Democratic-leaning state because of its voting history and its significant Hispanic population.

But Obama’s performance there, 42% favorable, 51% unfavorable, isn’t much different than his weak standing in the other Southwestern battlegrounds.

The Obama campaign argues that it has an outside shot at contesting Arizona, but his approval rating is at 40%, with 52% disapproving.

In New Hampshire, a state that John Kerry carried in 2004, Obama’s job approval is at 39%, with 54% disapproving, and it’s a state that with Romney heading the GOP ticket, is starting to look more and more out of reach.

So What Does Obama Have To Do To Win?

Based on the above numbers, the most plausible path for the president’s re-election runs through Virginia, Florida and Iowa, which isn’t a scenario that Team Obama drew up in its spin sessions, but if the polls are to be believed, then it’s likely the only way to go.

Human Events magazine and RedState.com, both part of Eagle Publishing, tried to make history by inviting Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich to one Lincoln-Douglas-style debate. The stunning news is that Mitt declined. …

At the time of writing, December 3, 2011, the Republican presidential primary appears to be narrowing down to a two-man contest between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

Both Human Events and RedState moved quickly to lock down a date for a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

And the two groups went out on a limb last Monday, and firmed up the Annenberg Theater, at the Newseum in Washington as the venue for Dec. 19 – after another debate that was scheduled for that date canceled.

Only One Problem

The Newseum was excited to host the pre-primary forum but there was just one problem.

While Gingrich was ready to take his place on the stage, the Romney campaign politely declined in a series of mostly e-mail exchanges.

And as Joe Guerriero, publisher of Human Events and Red State, put it:

“Newt was all over it, but the Romney camp basically said no. It wasn’t a harsh no, but it was a no".

Romney Should Have Accepted

A Gingrich spokesman confirmed that the candidate was interested and had accepted the invitation, but a Romney spokeswoman failed to return a request for comment.

Guerriero explained that the impetus for the debate was this:

"Romney has long been presumed to be the nominee. But with Gingrich surging in the polls, why shouldn’t the Republican base get a chance to see the two top candidates go toe-to-toe?”.

“No disrespect to any of the other candidates. Given the state of the country, the economy, and the race to date, if Romney is to be the nominee, he needs to go against the best debater with the deepest understanding of policy both domestic and foreign, and that appears to be Newt Gingrich".

Both Rommey And Gingrich Are Good Debaters

So What’s To Be Afraid Of?

It’s no secret that Gingrich loves debates, and he has performed exceedingly well in them, but so has Romney.

Guerriero and his colleagues believe Romney would stand to benefit from a two-person format featuring his toughest opponent to prepare him for debates against President Obama if he does win the GOP nomination.

Guerriero added;

“It looks like Newt’s made a real run at this, and the Romney camp is trying to run out the clock, and we don’t think that’s necessarily a wise strategy. The base should be able to see the top candidates answer the tough questions that these conservative publications don’t believe are being asked".

"Gingrich is itching to do it, but the Romney campaign has been more circumspect".

Right now it seems unlikely that there will be a debate until after the Iowa caucuses.

If Romney does win the nomination, will he refuse to debate Obama?

Dan Henninger categorically says what he thinks the U.S. can learn from Texas

The Texas Economy Is Huge

Rick Perry says that Texas is the most successful state in America and he’s right because Texas’ economic output even exceeds Mexico’s and Australia’s and is close to that of India’s.

Rick Perry has been governor of Texas for nearly eleven years, but does the logic of politics lead us to conclude that the governor of the nation’s most successful state is, ipso facto, the best man to be president of the economically gasping United States?

Texas, unlike California, isn’t America’s most beautiful state, and through October this year parts of Texas had 90 days of 100+ temperatures, yet companies and people keep moving into the high heat of Texas.

From Dan Henniger’s Wonderland

In a preview of his "Wonderland" column, Dan Henninger discusses what he thinks the U.S. can learn from Texas.

In 1990, one of the world’s biggest companies, Exxon Mobil, left New York City for Dallas. Exxon’s former CEO, Lee Raymond, says the move in part was indeed about costs and New York State’s notoriously overbearing tax authority. But it was also about working amid a culture of competence.

"It’s just the attitude in Texas of getting things done and doing them well".

This is about something beyond low taxes and no unions:

"In Texas the people tend to be farmers or individual businessmen, and they have this attitude".

"We have to make do with what we have and work together to get things done and survive".

"It’s can-do and that attitude permeates everything there".

Alan Boeckmann, until recently CEO of Fluor Corp., which is an engineering and construction firm, says:

"Regulatory and legal hassles pushed Fluor out of California. Congress passed Sarbanes-Oxley. California had its own version. There were constant class-action suits over Fluor’s benefits. It could have been settled, but not in California. That’s how the game is played there".

And when word of the 2006 move got out.

"California made no attempt to keep us. In Texas, things started to happen quickly, without us initiating them. The Irving Chamber of Commerce did orientation sessions for employees and spouses, even helping with new-house searches, and a street was renamed a street ‘Fluor Drive’, which in California or the Northeast would be laughable".

Smaller Fish Too

Ed Trevis, who is a smaller fish, is also happy.

Ed is a California-educated Brazilian immigrant and tech entrepreneur who operated in Silicon Valley for 25 years and moved Corvalent Corp. to Austin for similar reasons.

He had to hire a firm just to do California’s compliance.

"In California you are always doing something wrong".

"What I found in Texas is that from the standpoint of running a business, cost of living, education, the labor pool, quality of life, it just blew other states out of the water. I heard this constantly. People enjoy being in business in Texas".

More Points Of View

Technology consultant Bob Barker says while taking a visitor around the nearby hills,

"Austin may have more Ph.Ds driving taxis than any city in the country".

Austin’s famed population of big and small technology companies has suffered layoffs.

But Barker says:

"No one wants to leave. They stay, plugging into Austin’s numerous business-support networks. In Austin you discover a primary reason beneath Texas’ success. It’s about competition plus collaboration. It seems everyone in Texas high-tech knows everyone, and if they can help each other, they will".

David Booth, who moved Dimensional Fund Advisors’s headquarters to Austin from Santa Monica in 2008, puts Rick Perry’s role in perspective:

"He understands his job isn’t to get in the middle of everything".

Fluor’s Alan Boeckmann seconded that, and Mr. Booth and others said this is also true of the Texas lieutenant governor, its attorney general and the comptroller.

"They are very supportive of business",

says Lee Raymond,

"In the sense of moving things along. If there is a rock in the road, they want to know what they can do to move it out of the way".

Mr. Booth says:

"This isn’t merely the ‘pro-business’ bias of a Rick Perry or any other governor. Texas’ pro-business bias goes back about 175 years and never died. It’s just that they believe in the whole Horatio Alger myth down here. It’s hard to understand if you haven’t lived here".

Texas Or California?

Obama chose the California model and not the Texas one and look where America’s at!

The Texas mentality would be the same with or without Perry but he gave it free rein rather than bridling it, and it worked.

So This much Should Be Obvious

Texas, not California had better be the American future.

And somewhere inside of him, Rick Perry of Texas understands this distinction.

The Obama Administration (T.S. Eliot)

Obama’s Response To The Ongoing Crisis?

Our president is going on vacation.

He’s waiting until September to make a speech.

He’s coming back with another stimulus plan.

Even though he’s already admitted that there weren’t those shovel-ready jobs, he’s going to announce plans for roads and construction projects again.

He acknowledges that employers are struggling but he’s proposing another temporary payroll tax cut.

His big news is that they’ll be an even grander deal on the debt with huge new tax hikes!

Why September?

“I think the reason he’s taking the time to wait for his next speech on the economy is that he frankly doesn’t know what to do. I mean, he hasn’t spent his life in the private sector. He doesn’t understand that jobs come and go and he’s looking for help". – Mitt Romney

Campaign Rhetoric?

Certainly in part, but in this case Romney has aptly articulated President Obama’s problem because Obama is clearly in over his head.

The economy is worsening, his approval rating is in free-fall and now the CBC (Congressional Black Caucus) is poised to demand something impossible i.e. create jobs for blacks only.

What’s Being Considered By The Hollow Men?

Tax cuts for companies that hire workers.

New spending for roads and construction.

Other measures that would target the long-term unemployed such as providing mortgage relief for struggling homeowners, that could come through executive action.

Making the case that short-term spending can lead to long-term savings.

The Merits Of Short Term Spending?

White House allies, many of whom have pushed Obama in recent weeks to focus on job creation, said Wednesday that the president faces a stiff political test in explaining to voters the merits of short-term spending and long-term reduction of the federal deficit.

And of course it would be "a stiff political test" because it already didn’t work and voters inherently understand that promises of cuts down the road coupled with immediate spending sprees are precisely how we got into this situation.

A senior Republican Senate aide dismissed the president’s approach as,

"The same as always. Investments in union-friendly projects now, promises of austerity later".

And Speaker of the House John Boehner (R- Ohio) put out a statement yesterday pointing out the contrast between the Republican plans to spur private-sector growth and the president’s focus on government spending and borrowing:

“To get our economy moving, what the American people need from the President is leadership and serious solutions that reflect a true change in his approach to our economy and the role of government. We welcome him to our ongoing efforts to help create jobs, and look forward to seeing a detailed plan next month. It is my hope the President will offer specific proposals that depart from his previous policies and allow us to find common ground and work together to put Americans back to work. In the meantime, Republicans will continue to advance solutions that will reduce economic uncertainty and create a better environment for private-sector job creation".

Will Obama Be A One Term President?

Obama is trapped by his base, and by his own ideology that demands an endless cycle of spending, borrowing and taxing and it would now seem that the Congressional Black Caucus is about to put a final nail in his coffin.

Blacks make up around 12.6% of Americas population and right now around 86% percent of them still approve of the president’s performance.

Obama’s popularity is hovering around 40% right now, so just imagine what will happen if he loses much of the Black vote and most likely much of the Latino one too.

Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry who boasts imposing job-creation credentials, powerhouse fund-raising clout and instant appeal to the GOP’s conservative base now looms large as front-runner Mitt Romney’s worst nightmare, and Obama’s too.

Mitt Romney Will Need A New Game Plan

Dwayne Horner, a Dallas-based Republican consultant who served on Perry’s 2010 gubernatorial re-election campaign says:

"Romney needs to understand that the game has changed. His whole campaign is on notice after this announcement. He now has someone running against him who can beat him. Romney’s going against someone who’s created jobs, who embraced the Tea Party early on, and who has a record unmatched in Texas history".

And political observers are warning:

"Perry’s an evangelical Christian who carries a Ruger .380-caliber handgun, knows how to run a bare-knuckle campaign and he takes no prisoners".

Leonard Steinhorn, a political professor at American University pointed out that:

"Perry filleted his opponent during his 2010 gubernatorial campaign. Romney can’t just coast and act like President Obama is his only opponent anymore. Rick Perry is going to go after him, and he better be ready".

Live Free Or Die

Perry hit the early primary states of South Carolina and New Hampshire yesterday, touting his 11-year record as governor, adding that 40% of the nation’s new jobs since June 2009 have been created in Texas.

“I feel right at home amongst people whose motto is ‘Live free or die’, and I intend to compete for every vote in every state. This isn’t a strategy just to go work in a few places. We’re going to go all across the country".

Perry is expected to garner the most support in socially conservative states like South Carolina and Iowa, but his job-creation story is already catching the attention of Granite State voters.

“We have too many people who are out of work. We need someone who has a track record of creating jobs",

said N.H. state Rep. Jon Richardson (R-Allenstown), who is still deciding between Perry and Romney.

“He has to go from zero to 60 miles per hour overnight, which will be tough. Romney’s experience having been around this track once before and years of planning and organizing are a big advantage",

said Republican consultant Mark McKinnon.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has no faith in the Tea Party's ability to produce a president. This he noted today in a discussion with Christiane Amanpour on This Week, where he lamented the very tense tone …

Blaming the Tea Party Is Like Blaming The Firemen Who Came To Put Out The Fire!

Sen. Ron Paul

"A lot of us were elected to put out the fire, handle the debt. That’s why we went to Washington. That’s why we ran for office. Now they are going to blame the debt on us, when we came to try to fix the mess?"

"It is ludicrous on the face of it. I think it is an example of the failure of leadership that he will not accept responsibility. I think we are getting to the point where he’s going to have a failed presidency". Senator Rand Paul (R-KY)

"He got the budgets he wanted. He had both houses of congress. He got the stimulus and health-care that he wanted. This is his economy his record debt. Four times the worst year President Bush had" – Sean Hannity

A prescient article, Obama And The Missing Paper Trail that was written back in October 1978 stated:

Would Barack Obama be likely to fulfill his campaign promises of hope and change if he were elected President?

Judged by his previous achievements the answer would have to be a resounding ‘No’.

When faced with past failures he has always tried to obscure them, and if or when that was not possible he has blamed others.

The many “successes” that he has claimed in campaign speeches were often due to the work of others, but he always took, but never gave credit for them.

WASHINGTON — Credit rating agency Standard & Poor's says it will not downgrade the U.S. government's credit rating because a Congressional committee failed to come up with a plan to trim deficits by at least $1.2 trillion …

As you most likely already know, the U.S. had its AAA credit rating downgraded for the first time by S&P, which slammed the nation’s political process and said lawmakers failed to cut spending enough to reduce record deficits.

If you already know the bad news, but don’t know exactly the reasons for the downgrading then maybe watch the vid!

On Thursday, Dec.1st the battle to extend the payroll tax holiday and unemployment insurance benefits reached new heights in the Senate, as not only did…

Tax debate over, Obama lands in Hawaii – TheHill.com

White House pool reports suggest the president is in full vacation mode. Following a week of speculation about whether President Obama would be able to join his family in Hawaii for Christmas, or would be stuck in …

What’s going on right now is a battle between those in the Senate and the House that believe that more tax money is needed so that more can be spent, and those on the other side of the aisle, that don’t believe it!

Obama’s Anger

President Obama, who right now is the swagman for the more tax-wanters, can’t understand why the Republicans won’t join his crusade to add trillions of dollars, to the burden of the taxpayers.

And that’s trillions with a “t" and not billions with a “b”,

Will Rogers may never have met a man he didn’t like, but Obama has never met a tax he didn’t want to fondle, and he can’t give up his itch to cuddle these new trillions.

Will Roger obviously never met an agent

An AP (Associated Press) analysis suggests that adding trillions of dollars in new taxes will most affect small-business owners, and low, and middle-income families trying to reach for more prosperity.

* And AP leans left!

The Leftist Solution?

In his frantic push for more taxes Obama declares:

“We need to close tax loopholes for millionaires and billionaires, oil companies, hedge-fund managers and corporate jet owners".

“What we need to do is to have a balanced approach where everything is on the table".

"We need to take on spending in the tax code".

“You can’t reduce the deficit to the levels that it needs to be reduced without having some revenue in the mix".

In the same way that Marie Antoinette couldn’t understand why the poor wouldn’t eat cake when there was no bread, Obama can’t understand why a baron of Wall Street wouldn’t settle for a little Grumman or Falcon, even with a tax credit.

* Closing loopholes on those that use corporate jets would raise about one tenth of one percent of needed money!

What Happed To Euphemisms?

Obama, with his trillion-dollar “grand bargain", is now flailing about in frustration because the Republicans are refusing to use euphemisms, which is the preferred tongue of Capitol Hill.

To Obama’s chagrin, the Republicans obstinately continue to talk in Harry Truman English, and the Tea Partiers keep calling taxes, "taxes".

The Master Is Choking

Obama got to Washington, in part because he is a master of pulpit rhetoric, but now he’s choking on mixed metaphors:

“Pull off the Band-Aid. Eat our peas. Now’s the time to do it".

But euphemisms, however vague, cute or inexact, won’t work this time if the Republicans can resist an urge, which is deep within their DNA, to "fold in the clutch".

Taxes Are An Affliction

Some polls suggest that the majority of Americans want higher taxes, whereas others say that they don’t.

The left-wing polls suggest one opinion, and the right-wing ones another.

The majority of Americans might approve of higher taxes for other people of course, but the question that almost certainly went unasked in left-wing polls was, "Would YOU be happy to pay more tax?".

Thatcher And Palin

Many years ago, Margaret Thatcher astutely diagnosed the terminal ailment of all socialists:

“They always run out of other people’s money".

And Sarah Palin, who sets liberal teeth on edge with her gift of cutting colorfully to the chase, observed that:

"The Sugar Daddy has run out of money".

The Lines In The Sand

The Democrats are now crying that the Republicans must agree to tax increases or risk default, but that’s because the Democrats are unwilling to make the needed cuts in spending to prevent the default.

New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote that:

"Republicans no longer have a sense of moral decency and can’t accept the legitimacy of intellectual authorities".

But what he really meant was that taxpayers have finally got the tax-eaters’ number, and that the “intellectual authorities”, might as well get used to it.

Sounds a lot different to Obama doesn’t he?!

And who do you think won Fox News Channel’s debate last week among contenders for the GOP’s 2012 presidential nomination?

Don’t know?

It was Herman Cain!

How Do We Know?

Because Frank Luntz, who is a best selling author and GOP pollster, held an instant focus group after the debate which overwhelmingly declared the Cain the winner.

"In all the years I have been doing this, I have never seen a reaction like this to a debate. Something very special happened here tonight".

Contributions And Praise

Traffic and contributions to Cain’s web site have increased sharply in the days since the debate and the conservative media, particularly the blogosphere, praised the 65-year-old talk radio host from Georgia all weekend.

Another Win!

And shortly after the debate, he won a presidential straw poll at a Washington state GOP convention and drew a crowd of several hundred people in Las Vegas.

Who Is Cain?

Cain is best known as the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza where he is credited with saving the pizza chain from bankruptcy in the 1990s and making it profitable and he has extensive experience in the corporate world and even served as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City.

He has recently mastered the one-liners and fiery talk of conservative talk radio and also holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in computer science.

He made his debut on the national political stage back in 1994 when he challenged President Clinton on his health care reform package during a televised town hall.

But, whilst he has charisma and an impressive business resume, he has never held elected office before and when he was asked the reason for that at the debate, he had one of the evening’s most memorable answers:

“I’m proud of the fact that I haven’t held public office before. Most of the people that are in elected office in Washington DC, they have held public office before. How’s that workin’ for you? We have a mess. How about sending a problem-solver to the White House?”.

Does Cain Have What It Takes?

He’s good at one liners but he hasn’t to my mind yet shown any real ability to discuss serious topics like foreign affairs, and Dave Funk, who’s a prominent Republican Party official in Iowa, was quoted in a Wall Street Journal profile of Cain expressing a similar impression.

"Herman is a great speaker and makes a great first impression. But what I don’t see yet is a great deal of depth on things like Afghanistan and national defense".

Does He Have A Chance?

It is still a long way to the nomination, but Herman Cain is now a player, and the main question now is,

"Will the former pizza mogul be able to deliver the goods?".
